Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a method used to convert user requirements to design requirements with quality thinking. The focus of this method is to achieve higher quality by defining the functions of subsystems or components of a product along the user's requirements.

Akao(external link) is regarded as the father of QFD and around 1990 originally defined it as a planning/ communication framework to enable the design, production and marketing of the products, goods and services that customers desire to buy. QFD is therefore a relatively new tool (compared eg with fishbone diagrams that are about 50 years old), and has been implemented partly due to the need to apply six sigma to services, not just manufacturing.
