This technique is a pull concept formulated to synchronize the rate of processing to the customer’s rate of consumption (or need). The synchronization of the supply and demand equation is a critical component of eliminating muda or waste.

Takt time is calculated by dividing the capacity (available process time) by the number of units required to meet the rate of consumption (demand). The calculated value is used to pace the production to synchronize the supply and demand and is used to optimize each process in the value stream. The constant analysis of the Takt Time to the actual process time will identify muda or non value-added activities that need to be eliminated.
